Phthalates 101
Phthalates are synthetic chemicals used as plasticisers, commonly found in plastics and sometimes in the materials used to process and store oils. They are much more likely to be found in high-temperature refined oils, including low-quality olive and avocado oils. If oils are contained in plastic bottles, they may also include them.
Negative Health Effects
- Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormone function.
- They can lower testosterone levels and reduce fertility in men.
- They are xenoestrogens (the body confuses them for sex hormones) and block natural oestrogen uptake, affecting fertility and menstrual cycles in women.
- Linked to thyroid dysfunction.
- Phthalates are particularly harmful to developing fetuses and children.
- Associated with lower birth weight, altered brain development, and potential behavioral issues.
- Increased risk of congenital disabilities, particularly in male reproductive organs.
- Phthalates are obesogenic chemicals, increasing obesity risk.
- Increased breast cancer risk.
- Worsen metabolic syndrome.
What to recommend?
Always choose high-quality, cold-pressed oils stored in dark glass bottles. Whenever possible, choose an independently tested range like Hunter and Gather’s, which you can find here on our website.
